My name is Ilona, but you maybe know me as I Love Green Grass, and my DIY weapons of choice are knitting needles and a sewing machine
When I am looking for inspiration I look at my daily life. Usually I need something (a new outfit, a cover for my smartphone etc.) and try to make it myself.
After a long day of making things I like to go exercise to prepare for an obstacle run. I need to move, it gives me the energy to be creative.
I got started making when I was able to pick up pencils. I have been making and creating my whole life. But things really got serious when I started my blog.
The one thing that drives my creativity is my blog. It gives me a weekly push to start a nice DIY or come up with a yummy recipe.
When I think about starting a new project I feel happy!
If I wasn’t a graphic designer I would love to be running my own animal sanctuary. Maybe try showing how smart pigs are and that every animal has its own personality.
The first thing I do when I wake up is eat breakfast. I am not a morning person at all, so I need a lot of time to wake up. Breakfast helps.
My favorite place to buy supplies is online. Lately I haven’t been buying a lot, because my stash is huge! When I buy, I try to buy animal and environmental friendly yarn. The last yarn I bought was from Wolgoed.nl, some nice Rosy Green Wool.
The one thing that can cheer me out of any bad mood is (a special character in this case) Esther the Wonderpig! If I feel down I go and watch some pics and movies on her Facebook page. Esther always cheers me up!
My favorite word is ‘green’ (my favorite color, but also my way of life)
My least favorite word is 2 words: ‘global warming’. Really makes me sad when I think about the negative impact humans can have on such a beautiful planet.
Making makes me feel independent. If you know how something is made, you can learn how to make it yourself.
I get out of a creative rut by cutting myself some slack.
I love the work of Banksy and Christo. Art and design is for everyone!
My favorite thing about making is making people happy with my creations.
To me, DIY means less buying, more recycling.
My mom is my personal cheerleader, my dad helps me stay calm when I forget that there is always a solution if you want to DIY, and my boyfriend gives me all the space I need for my creativity. The mixture of these three people works as a positive influence.
My favorite thing to do on the weekend is knitting while watching a ‘whodunnit crime series’.
I can’t get enough yarn!
Three words that describe me: chaotic, positive, creative
Three words that describe my work: unique, straight-forward and precise
Best creative advice I ever received is ‘never become professional’. Got if from a wall calendar. (Quote is from Tijn Touber)
My go-to karaoke song is Paradise City from Guns ‘N Roses (this is where my blog name ‘I Love Green Grass’ comes from).
I never leave the house without my smile!
If I could live in any other counry it would be: Sweden. Loads of space, friendly people and it is such a beautiful country
One fact about me that’s embarrassingly awesome is that I race muddy obstacle trails as passionate as I knit hats.
My DIY secret weapon is Staci from VeryPink.com!
The biggest DIY mistake I ever made was buying cheap yarn and sewing gear. My sewing machine literally complains when I try to use cheap thread.
My next project is, besides the little projects I plan to knit and sew, the Chloe coat (pattern from La Maison Victor) together with my awesome creative grandma. She turned 88 years old this month, but is still my go to when I have sewing problems.
