My name is Linda Lee, but you maybe know me from The Sewing Workshop, and my DIY weapon of choice is a sewing machine!
Having spent many years in the interior design industry, I still love interior magazines. The trends show up there just as they do in fashion, I love looking at interior fabrics, colors and textures and using those as inspirations as fabrics choices for our sample garments.
After a long day of making things I like to hand stitch garments, especially those designed by Alabama Chanin. Reverse appliqué, negative reverse appliqué are my favorites.
I got started making when I was in sixth grade when I made felt caps in my school colors and sold them for $1.00 each. I made enough money to buy enough fabric to make dirndl skirts and sell them.
The one thing that drives my creativity is seeing what other people are doing and getting excited about their work.
When I think about starting a new project I gather my materials in my studio and then let it “cook” for a few days.
The best part about running my own business is working with my staff and watching their creativity explode and become reality.
I started by business because I couldn’t get the job that I wanted.
When I think about people using my supplies, I feel very proud knowing that I have helped someone make a good decision to use something of value.
My advice to anyone looking to start their own business is to be prepared to never have enough money on hand and being unfairly criticized.
The most important thing I’ve learned from starting my own business is perseverance is everything. Just at the point when you think you can’t hang on any longer, something good always happens if you just hang on one more day.
If I wasn’t a pattern designer I would love to be a dancer on Broadway.
