My name is Maria, but you maybe know me as kneema and my DIY weapons of choice are needles & hooks!
When I am looking for inspiration I check my stitchionary and my pattern library which is constantly expanding.
After a long day of making things I like to go for a nice big walk.
I got started making in 2011 when my mother challenged me to knit. Some years later a good friend who is an interior designer asked me to make some plant-hangers, so I started doing macrame using cotton twine. I really enjoyed to work with twine because of the textured result so I tried to expand my skills in crochet with twine and then my rope-bags were born.
The one thing that drives my creativity is nice & chunky texture!
When I think about starting a new project I….just don’t think too much! I enjoy searching for an interesting color combination or a nice chunky yarn and then I start to experiment. Many corrections are done during the process as I am not good in checking gauge….
If I wasn’t a civil engineer I would love to be a musician.
The first thing I do when I wake up is to put some nice music on, I think it’s the best way to start your day.
My favorite place to buy supplies is the local yarn shops. I usually don’t buy online, I like to get a close view of yarns, colors and textures.
The song that can cheer me out of any bad mood is Get Lucky by Daft Punk.
I get out of a creative rut by making my workspace nice and tidy. When there is mess around me everything is getting more difficult.
I most relate to creative people, to people who love to communicate & express their thoughts and feelings.
My favorite designers are: Guðrun & Guðrun, Helen Rödel & Pugnat.
My favorite thing about making is starting from scratch. Putting effort, time & love on something you have imagined and you want to create. The result is not good always. But the whole process involves so many skills, feelings, thoughts and generally reflects the quality of life you want to achieve.
To me, DIY means precious time well spent.
The first thing I made was a scarf. Just knits and purls. And holes created accidentally.
The most influential people in my life are for sure my family and my friends. As I grow up with them and we share most of things, dealing with good or bad situations.
My favorite thing to do on the weekend is spending time with friends.
I can’t get enough of summer holidays!
Three words that describe my work: Colors, textures, love-for-details
Best creative advice I ever received is "one step at a time".
I live in Larissa, a city in central Greece. It’s a big city but not a crowded place. I enjoy walking around and there is a nice walking path by Pinios river. If I could live in another place I would like to stay in a Greek island, each one of them is so beautiful & special, especially in the summer!
The biggest DIY mistake I constantly do is not checking the gauge before starting a knitting project……. Trial and error methodology involves unravelling…..
My next project is knitted Bow Ties!
