Meet the Maker: Riga

My name is Riga, but you maybe know me as @rigasutherland on Instagram, and my DIY weapons of choice are my sewing machine and crochet hooks.

When I am looking for inspiration I browse through Pinterest and my Instagram feed. I also get inspirations from seeing what people are wearing.

After a long day of making things I like to sit and relax with a cup of tea and crochet. Crochet is very relaxing and I can do it while watching TV.

I got started making when I was little. My mom taught me how to crochet and hand-sew since I was young, but I didn’t start sewing clothes until last year. I started with sewing clothes for my daughter and now I’m sewing for myself, too.

The one thing that drives my creativity is the modifications I can make to a garment.

When I think about starting a new project I sketch it out and make a list. If it’s a dress, I write down all the details I want to do with the dress (lengthen the sleeves, pleated skirt instead of gathered, lower the neckline, etc.)

If I wasn’t a graphic designer I would love to be a surface designer for products like wallpaper or fabric.

The first thing I do when I wake up is make a cup of coffee.

My favorite place to buy supplies is Craftsy and

The movie that can cheer me out of any bad mood is 500 Days of Summer.

My favorite word is joy.

My least favorite word is bored.

Making makes me feel like I can turn my ideas to reality. It makes me feel happy and fulfilled.

I get out of a creative rut by taking a break and then doing something else.

My favorite artists/designers/makers are Lisa from Sew Over It London, Rae from Made by Rae, and Beth from Sew DIY. I have learned so much from Lisa’s tutorial videos.

My favorite thing about making is wearing the clothes that I made myself… that fit! You use your measurements to find your size on the pattern, not the other way around. I can tweak the pattern to make it work for me.

To me, DIY means the possibilities are endless. Everything you do can be personalized to your own taste. That’s what I love about sewing. You get to create something that is uniquely you!

The first thing I made was a crochet yoke dress for my daughter.

The most influential person in my life is my mom. She is the artistic one in the family. Growing up, I saw her cross stitched big pieces or work, crochet delicate doilies, and made clothes alterations for everyone in the family.

My favorite thing to do on the weekend is sew since I only have time to sew on the weekends.

I can’t get enough coffee, dark chocolate, dress patterns, crochet granny squares color combinations, and fabrics.

Three words that describe me are: creative, introverted, and thoughtful.

Three words that describe my work are: simple, casual, and practical.

Best creative advice I ever received is don’t sweat the mistakes. It’s all a part of the learning process. Give yourself a break and have fun!

I never leave the house without my phone, a notebook, and lip gloss.

If I could live in any other country it would be Japan.

One fact about me that’s embarrassingly awesome is I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls. I never get tired of watching them over and over again.

My DIY secret weapon is needle for hand-sewing.

The biggest DIY mistake I ever made was cutting through 2 layers of fabric by mistake while trimming the seam allowance. It is something I make sure not to make it happen again.

My next project is black Emery Dress. I love colors and patterns but I know I will wear the dress more often with solid color and it will be perfect for Fall/Winter wardrobe.
