Nora Meets the Maker: Silke from Schnittchen Patterns!

The more cool indie pattern companies keep popping up, the more we're inspired to dig through our fabric stash and get to work on some new sewing projects and few inspire us quite as much as Munich, Germany based Schnittchen Patterns.

Whether it's her fashion-forward Lisa Pants or her brand new Malu Coat - we have every one of Schnittchen designer Silke's patterns in our sewing queue and now can't wait to get our hands on her book as soon as it comes out!

My name is Silke Türck, but you maybe know me as Schnittchen Sewing Patterns, and my DIY weapons of choice are my heart, my soul, my sewing machine and my seam ripper

When I am looking for inspiration I go for a walk.

After a long day of making things I like to have a relaxed evening at home with my husband and my two little boys, meeting my friends, going to the movies, “breathing in - breathing out” (=YOGA!)

I got started making when I was very little. Still in elementary school I was looking over my mums shoulder every time she was sewing. Later I was dressing up my little sister with my own creations up to the point she said “NO!” Then I didn’t dress her up any more but started sewing for my own.

When I think about starting a new project I first write every thought down. After that I have to reduce my notes which are spread all over my home and my office to some basic ideas and a ”to do” and (very important!) a “not to do” list. Then I add pictures and scribbles and create a kind of mood board.

The best part about running my own business is realising my own ideas, seeing how the business is growing, meeting so many interesting people, getting feedback from my customers!

My advice to anyone looking to start their own business is take your time to plan everything carefully and stay true to yourself! Get your inspiration from other people but don’t get lost in their visions!

The first thing I do when I wake up is I make some coffee and wake up my boys.

The movie that can cheer me out of any bad mood is “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and the song Sonsick by San Fermin.

My favorite word is Pleasure

My least favorite word is Unprofessional

I most relate to the wind

My favorite designer is Rachel Comey, Rachel Comey and Rachel Comey – I just love her style, the fabrics she uses and I would love to have EVERYTHING from her collections

My favorite thing about making is that you can see your project growing - step by step.

To me, DIY means passion, recreation, sustainability, creativity, pride, focusing

The first thing I made was s cellular shirt out of a curtain. 80s style…

Three words that describe me: Mostly cheerful, empathic, persistent

Three words that describe my work: Diverse, fun, multitasking

Best creative advice I ever received is to keep it real!

My go-to karaoke song is “Chasing Cars” from Snow Patrol

I never leave the house without having had some coffees!

If I could live in any other city it would be NEW YORK!

One fact about me that’s embarrassingly awesome is my boys!

The biggest DIY mistake I ever made was once I tried to crotchet squares for a blanket. It took me so much time to understand how to realize straight edges although it is not that tricky.…

My next project is a book… Already working on it!
