Hermione's Everyday Socks
by Michelle Carter Follow

This will be my third pair of socks in like ten years of knitting.  I'm doing these for the Kollabora KAL.  I'm actually kind of excited about socks.  Everyone has knit this pattern it seems, plus I'm using up stash.  #kollabsockalong

Recap

  • I'm thru the cuffs, working two at a time.

  • They are coming along and may be a bit large for me, but I don't want to start over.  They'll make a great gift. The stripes aren't showing off the texture as much as I'd like, but I still like the way they're working up.

  • Ugh! These were just too big, so I ripped them back and started over with 12 less cast-on sts.  Knitting feverishly but won't be done today.

  • Reknitting these with only 52 cast-on stitches for a much better fit.  Plus, I've added contrasting yarn for heels and toes.

  • Finally finished and I love how they turned out.

these look SO good (and comfy)!

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

Thanks so much!  I had a little trouble along the way, but it was all worth it because it's such a cute design and, yes, very comfortable.

I've been knitting for years but I've never tried socks. You just blew my mind with knitting BOTH at the same time!

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

This is only my third pair, Andrea.  I guess I have been reluctant because the small needles and yarn seemed tedious, but it seems like I knit everything on tiny needles these days, so I might as well.  You should try this pattern.  It seems to be an internet favorite.

Ooh!  These look so cool!  I love the stripes in the variegated yarn - maybe my next pair will be the same...!  Two at once?  You truly are the wizard of the magic loop!

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

Thanks, Nishi.  I am no wizard!  More like a spaz :)  But I know it will be hard for me to knit the second one if I don't do them together.

Are you knitting both socks at the same time? That's amazing. Never thought of that.

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

Yes, I am. It helps me to get them the same tension and length.  Here's a video on magic loop:

Just use a really long circular and load up two socks, side by side.  It's
awkward at first, but once you get it going I think it's a little easier than dpns.

    Nora replied 6 years ago

Great video. And you're using one loop for both socks? I use circular needles a lot, but haven't thought of using them like that.

    Love that yarn!

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

I do too!  I like that it's one of those yarns anyone can get a hold of at a hobby store.

  • Hannah commented 6 years ago

That yarn is gorgeous! Who's Hermione, though? Is this a Harry Potter reference?

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

Yes, only I realized I misspelled Hermione- yikes-  I'm glad you asked or I wouldn't have even noticed :)  I've actually never read the series.

  • TheMissLinds commented 6 years ago

yay!! excited you're jumping in on this.

Michelle Carter replied 6 years ago

    Thanks, me too!
