Rick Owens Hack
by Red-lia Follow

The minute I saw this Rick Owens' vest (from Fall 2015 RTW), I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I decided to hack it, with a few mods: the back will be knit (got the perfect chunky wool), I will add long sleeves (also knit), and recreate the front with fabrics. I was hesitant about the "wing" at the back. I thought I'll do without it. Later I decided to do it, but tone it down a little. A bit less drama...

  • Drafted my own sewing pattern, based on the same top used here.

I calculated all the numbers to knit the back, measuring it against the paper pattern. Didn't follow a knitting pattern. Knit flat bottom-up, with waist shaping done at about a 1/3 distance from the side seams.

  • Working on the front panels.

Both pieces are sewn onto a black suiting fabric (the same one peeking on the right shoulder), doubling as lining and as a stabilizer. The blue fabric is a knit wool blend.

  • Trying it on. The shoulders and sides are still attached with pins.

    (Crappy photo, my appologies ;P)

  • Side and shoulder seams are sewn. Finished both sleeves.

  • All fabric-to-knit seams were done with machine. All knit-knit seams wer done manually. The back "wing" is also attached manually, in case I'd decide later to take it out.
