Step 1: Prepare your dye according to the instructions on your kit and set aside. The dye will need to see for at least 15-20 minutes prior to dyeing. Also prepare a small bowl of warm water which you will soak your fabric in before placing into the dye.
Step 2: Begin folding your chosen fabric piece using the accordion technique (over and under).
Note: Additional folding techniques are included in your Indigo Dye kit instructions!
Step 3: Once you have the fabric folded into one long strip, continue to accordion fold the fabric (over and under) from right to left.
Step 4: Continue folding until your fabric is bundled like the photo on the right.
Step 5: Place a set of chopsticks on either side of the fabric bundle and secure both sets of chopstick ends with rubber bands.
Step 6: Place your fabric bundle into the bowl of water and soak thoroughly and squeeze excess water from the fabric bundle.
Step 7: Before dropping fabric into the indigo dye, take your hand and skim it across the top of the dye to clear away any mixture residue.
Step 8: Dunk fabric bundle into the indigo dye and let it sit for between 15 and 30 minutes. Remove from dye and squeeze excess liquid from bundle. Remove the chopsticks and unfold bundle. Let dry on a drying rack or tarp for an additional 30 minutes. You will see the green color start to transform into the beautiful indigo blue hue!
Note: Indigo dye is very potent, so remove the bundle in close proximity to where you plan to let the fabric dry to avoid excess dripping or spillage.
Step 9: Wash and dry the fabric to remove any excess dye. Cut around the edges of the fabric using pinking scissors. Fold the edges under, pin and sew around the entire edge of the piece of fabric.
