Bodkin Tulip Top
-
the pieces laid out on the table
This top is in the very beginning stages, but I thought I'd share it to see if anyone has any advice or ideas. The inspiration is the Bodkin Tulip Top pictured, although it would be a VERY bad idea for me to wear it in the same manner as the model. I used the Scout Woven Tee pattern as my starting point, made two front pieces with mirror image tullip curves. The fabric is black polka dotted silk. Here's hoping it turns out!
Recap
OK, I finished the top, and I'm trying to pull off the intense "Don't Mess with ME" look of the model. I love the finished top! The silk is super soft and drapes in just the right way, and it fits like a dream. French seams throughout. In addition to the criss cross front, I lengthened the sleeves and modified the neck to make it more of a boat neck like the original. It worked!

very cool variation!
Really nice! Coincidentally today I am wearing a very similar t-shirt (shop bought) that crosses over in the same way but at the back, and I was thinking of making another.
It is very cool top, I will hopefully make it also. Thank you so much for the inspiration! You really look perfect!
THANK YOU! You should definitely try it. It's easy to do, and I find that I wear it all of the time.
i have this pinned as a project i will be trying. I love the scout tee pattern, its so versatile.. i used it just recently to draft a dress
Took a look at your blog and I LOVE your dress and your plaid tee! It is such a great pattern that just begs you to dream up variations. Definitely try the tulip hack....it's so simple. One tip....I widened outer shoulder flap (the part that crosses over onto the opposite shoulder), and then gathered it a little so that the front would drape the tiniest bit. Wow...reading that, I'm not sure it makes sense....
I like your much more than the Bodkin one. And I love your haircut!
I handn't seen the original top before seeing your version; I was sure you were the model!
Wow!! Thank you so much! I am really happy with the top, and one of the things I like best about it is that it is kind of ageless. It can be worn by a teenager or a grandmother and look OK on either.
Congratulations. What a beautiful variation you've created!
Thank you! I hope that maybe I'll see a couple more Tulip Scouts turning up!
Perfect top on you and the model! By the way, with sewing like that, French seams and all, you've earned the right to the "Don't mess with Me" look. You've got skills!
Haha! Thank you! That is such a sweet thing to say. That look definitely didn't come naturally to me.
Very very nice!!!
Thank you!
OOOOHHHH... that tulip version is very nice!
Thanks! I like how it turned out...and not too hard to make.
This is really great - I love the softness of the lines - so pretty and flattering :)
Thanks! I'm amazed at how you turned problem into an asset with your color-blocked Scout!
Wow! How creative, I really love it.
Thanks! I was surprised at how easily it came together.
This looks gorgeous!
Thanks! I may have to make 10 more.
I love it! Classy yet stylish. Super cute.
Thanks. I like that it is stylish, but in a quieter way. The Scout really is a great palette.
This looks super cool! Great job!
Thanks so much. BTW, I'm a huge fan of your blog.
I love this version so much! Sleek!
Thanks! I'm pretty happy with it, and it wasn't too hard to work out. Now if only I were as sleek as the uber-serious model!
Gorgeous! One of my favorite versions so far!
Thanks Shae! I love, love your linen Scout dress. I'm determined to try it myself.
What a great idea!! This Sew-Along is bringing out so many super star pattern hackers!!
Thank you!
