About 4 years ago, Jessica Decker was participating in an art battle in Detroit with friend Erin Ellis. They needed a cool project that would capture the attention of the audience, plus play on both their strengths and loves. Jessica spent some time doing industrial seamstress work for a display company during college, using large graphics and fabric elements for exhibits. This, paired with her love for typography and sassy cross-stitch, is what lead to the fun, oversized sitch projects she has created as her trademark. Check out the Jessica Decker x Kollabora giant cross-stitch kits and learn a little bit more about the woman behind the stitches!
My name is Jessica “J.D.” Decker and my crafting weapon of choice is a tapestry needle and yarn.
My favorite designer is Herb Lubalin, artist is Margaret Killgallin, Art Director is John Korpics and when I am looking for inspiration I always head to old typography books, vintage signage, 70’s craft books, blueprint magazine.
When I think about starting a new project I get excited about the challenge of coming up with something new.
My favorite time of day to get crafty is usually early evening - after a long day of sitting at the computer.
I got started crafting when I was really young, my grandma taught me how to knit and sew. She recently gave me the sewing machine she used to teach me to sew on – it’s a vintage Singer from the 50’s and I love it.
The best part about running my own business is I can work whenever I want, and I don’t have to report to anyone.
What I wish I would have known before starting my business is that you have to be extremely organized, because you’re doing more than just designing things and being creative. You have to take care of shipping, invoicing, pricing, and all these other details you don’t really consider until you start doing everything on your own… I’m figuring everything out as I go along!
If I wasn’t an art director I would love to be a freelance illustrator or letterpress designer.
The first thing I do when I wake up is hit the snooze button 4 times… I’m not a morning person.
My favorite iPhone/smartphone app is Instagram, because it makes photos looks dreamier, and I love checking out all of the photos that my friends post.
Friday is the best day of the week because I have more time for crafting during the weekend. And beer drinking.
To me, DIY means taking the time to do something yourself, instead of buying it, or paying someone to do it for you.
My favorite word is "booyah”, - and I totally overuse it. My least favorite words are any shortened word such as “fab” or “totes”.
Favorite food to eat on a sunny day is pizza, in any kind of weather.
The song that can cheer me out of any bad mood is "You Can Call Me Al" by paul simon – also happens to be my favorite music video.
My favorite thing about making is the satisfaction of finishing a project, hanging up a piece of artwork that I made, or seeing the final piece hanging on someone else’s wall!
