Nora Meets the Maker: Heather from Knit.n.Bee

My name is Heather, but you maybe know me as Knit.n.Bee, and my DIY weapons of choice are rotary cutter, clear ruler and a seam ripper. Always the seam ripper.

When I am looking for inspiration I browse the internet, read sewing blogs, maybe watch a classic movie.

After a long day of making things I like to go to bed. Doesn’t everyone sew during all their free moments?

I got started making things when I was a little kid. Both my mother and grandmother, who lived next door,  sewed. They would let me mess around with their fabric scraps and showed me how to use a sewing machine.

When I think about starting a new project I simultaneously think about 5 other new projects that could also be started and then drive myself slowly insane. Or if I’m in a monogamous sewing mood then I just have a lot of fun picking out fabric. Buying fabric is the best.

The song that can cheer me out of any bad mood is anything by Gordon Lightfoot. His mellow voice always chills me out.

My favorite word is Llama.  It’s super fun to say, especially over and over again. Llama, llama, llama.

My least favorite word is Bill. You mean I have to pay for all this awesome stuff I want? Crap. ;)

Making makes me feel like a variety of feelings. First excitement, then aggravated and finally a feeling of deep satisfaction….unless I screwed it all up. Then I rage sew knits until equilibrium is reached.

I get out of a creative rut by pulling out an easy knitting project and do some TV watching. TV knitting is my happy place.

My favorite thing about making is wearing the finished item! Pretty sure half of my sewing obsession is having new clothing all the time without spending $$$ every month.

To me, DIY means having the option to make pretty much any garment yourself.  There are things I prefer to buy from stores, but knowing that I “could” make that thing is empowering.

The first thing I made was clothing for my stuffed animals. They had some very snazzy dresses.

The most influential person in my life was my paternal Grandmother Ruth was a big influence on my childhood and remains on the top of my mind today. She always called me “her clone” and we were very alike in a lot of ways.  She past on several years ago, but I still miss talking to her.

My favorite thing to do on the weekend is ignore as many grown up responsibilities as possible and sew. Even better if my husband takes our son on an outing and I can sew without interruptions.

I can’t get enough Chocolate!!!!! It is the mana of the gods

Three words that describe me: Goofy, Stubborn, Hungry

Three words that describe my work: Semi-Retro, Jewel-tones, Well-fitted.

Best creative advice I ever received is make a muslin, save the fabric

I never leave the house without my sunglasses! I have crazy vampire eyes that are supersensitive to light. The light… burnsssss!!!

If I could live in any other state it would be somewhere in the mid west so I could pretend to be a cow girl.

One fact about me that’s embarrassingly awesome is that I laugh at just about anything. Bad jokes, bad puns, the bar is extremely low.

My DIY secret weapon is my toy frog who is my sewing room companion. When I get aggravated I squeeze his sides a bit and feel a little calmer

The biggest DIY mistake I ever made was trying to cut chiffon without putting it between two pieces of paper. It did not go well.

My next project is most likely some sort of shirtdress. I’ve caught shirtdress fever and can’t get enough of them.

Ha ha! Lovely article! I totally agree on the "jewel-tone", "buying fabric" and "drive myself slowly insane".
